Foodspotting & Me

As an avid food lover and shutterbug, I had long enjoyed taking photos of my food.  When I got my first camera-phone (a Sony Cybershot), the hobby took off even further.

So it seemed like wonderful happenstance when I stumbled upon the website, Foodspotting.com.  Launched in January of 2010, Foodspotting is a visual food guide for the web that categorizes restaurants by photos of their most popular dishes.  Users can post photos via the website but also interface with their very popular iPhone, Android, and other apps.  It quickly became one of my all-time favorite websites.


But truth be told, I had some help along the way.  A good friend of mine had actually emailed me an invite to the beta launch of their site in 2009 and, given my love of food and photos, I was soon using it religiously.  It seemed like a website had been created for one of my favorite hobbies.

Being an avid and early user had some fantastic perks.  Foodspotting, based in nearby San Francisco, welcomed me with open arms and I was soon invited to their launch party and, subsequently, to their 1 year birthday bash.  If their founders (Alexa, Ted, and Soraya) are so welcoming of their users, it says a lot about what a great foundation the company is built on.


Throughout it all, it's been a privilege to see the company expand, grow, and become exponentially more popular with collaborations with a literal Who's Who in the food industry: from Anthony Bourdain to Zagat.  And it hasn't even been 2 years yet!

Among the latest directions is that Foodspotting recently named 10 Ambassadors that would help spread the word and encourage the community behind their increasingly global website.  I was honored to be chosen to help represent Silicon Valley.


One of the ways in which we'll share Foodspotting with others is by organizing Eatups around the country.  The idea is simple.  Great food, friendly people and sharing whatever ideas you may have about food, photos, or the web.  It's what Foodspotting is truly about.

We had our first event recently at Patxi's Pizza in Palo Alto.  I was thrilled by both the enthusiastic turn out as well as how awesome Patxi's was in helping us host a fun and very filling Eatup.  May it be a blueprint for future events to come!

It's been a great ride thus far and I'm looking forward to seeing the places we go.  We'll have more Eatups for sure and continue to look for the best places to gather and share great food.  I LOVE Foodspotting and am more than happy to share over that next meal. Hope to see you then!

Discovery: Alexander's Steakhouse, Wakuriya, and Sushi Yoshizumi

People often ask me why I write so many reviews and try so many restaurants.  One reason is that I like variety.  Trying different cuisines is a fun way to keep things interesting and novel. A more important reason may be the idea of discovery.  Akin to a child tasting ice cream for the first time or a young adult hearing their very first concert, the discovery of something new and special is always thrilling and exciting. 100% Perfect Girl - A Japanese Short Story
